About Silvermine
Silvermine straddles the borders of New Canaan, Norwalk, and Wilton along a river valley that gave the area its name. Colonial-era legends of a silver mine drew early settlers, but it was sculptor Solon Borglum who reshaped the neighborhood's identity when he built a hillside studio near the Silvermine River in 1906. The Silvermine Arts Center, formally incorporated in 1922, anchors a creative community that persists more than a century later. Homes here sit on one-to-two-acre wooded lots along winding roads, and the landscape is closer to rural New England than suburban Fairfield County.

Country Living in Silvermine
Silvermine Road descends from New Canaan's higher ground into a valley carved by the Silvermine River, crossing into Norwalk and Wilton without ceremony. The borders are administrative. The neighborhood itself is continuous: heavily wooded, hilly, and defined by roads that follow the topography rather than a grid. Stone walls run alongside properties where colonial-era farms once operated, and many of those original parcels remain intact at one to two acres or more.
The Silvermine Arts Center sits on a five-acre campus that includes an award-winning School of Art, five exhibition galleries, a permanent print collection, and an outdoor Sculpture Walk. Founded as the Silvermine Guild of Artists after Solon Borglum's death in 1922, the center grew from the weekly critiques Borglum hosted with painters Addison T. Millar and D. Putnam Brinley in his riverside studio. Their tradition of juried exhibitions continues today, drawing a Guild of over 300 professional artists. That institutional presence shapes the housing stock: antique farmhouses share the neighborhood with artist studios, converted barns, and custom contemporaries designed to frame views of the surrounding canopy.
Privacy is the dominant characteristic. Driveways disappear into tree cover. Homes are oriented toward their land rather than the street. The Silvermine River threads through the valley floor, and several properties back up to its banks or to tributary streams. The Norwalk Association of Silvermine Homeowners has pursued National Register of Historic Places recognition for the core area, underscoring the architectural and cultural weight concentrated in a relatively small geographic footprint.
Silvermine trades walkability and village convenience for acreage and seclusion. Downtown New Canaan is roughly a ten-minute drive north. The Merritt Parkway interchange at Route 7 is close by, and Norwalk's commercial corridors are accessible heading south. Buyers in this price range, typically $1 million to $2 million and above, are choosing Silvermine specifically because it does not resemble the rest of New Canaan. The arts center, the river valley, and the tree cover create a setting that has attracted a particular kind of homeowner for more than a hundred years.

Housing in Silvermine
Silvermine's housing stock is unusually varied for a New Canaan neighborhood. Original colonial farmhouses from the 1700s and 1800s still stand along Silvermine Road and its branches, some with visible post-and-beam construction beneath later renovations. Mid-century homes occupy several of the interior parcels, and newer custom contemporaries take advantage of sloped sites and mature tree screening. Artist studios, both freestanding and converted from barns or outbuildings, appear throughout the neighborhood and occasionally come to market as accessory structures. Lot sizes range from one acre to well over two acres, with many properties backing onto the Silvermine River or protected woodland. Homes generally trade between $1 million and $2 million, though properties with larger acreage, significant renovations, or direct river frontage push above that range. The median listing price has hovered near $1.6 million in recent market cycles.
Real Estate in Silvermine
Silvermine appeals to buyers who prioritize land, privacy, and character over proximity to town amenities. Inventory turns over slowly because homeowners tend to invest in renovations rather than move to other neighborhoods. The arts center and the three-town geography create a micro-community identity that residents value and are reluctant to leave. Properties spend a median of roughly eight weeks on the market, longer than New Canaan's denser neighborhoods closer to the train station. Buyers coming from New York City or from tighter-lot Fairfield County towns are often drawn to the combination of acreage, architectural variety, and the Silvermine Arts Center's programming. The tradeoff is the drive to downtown New Canaan and the Metro-North station, which makes this neighborhood less appealing to daily commuters who want a short walk to the platform.

Silvermine occupies the southwestern edge of New Canaan, bordering both Norwalk and Wilton. Downtown New Canaan and its Metro-North station are approximately a ten-minute drive north via Silvermine Road to South Avenue. The Merritt Parkway is accessible via the Route 7 interchange in Norwalk, roughly five minutes south, providing connections toward Stamford, Bridgeport, and New Haven. Norwalk's commercial corridors along Main Avenue and Route 1 are a short drive south, and the SoNo Collection mall in South Norwalk is within fifteen minutes. Wilton's town center is accessible heading northwest. The neighborhood is car-dependent; there are no sidewalks or bus routes along Silvermine Road, and the terrain makes cycling impractical for most errands.
