Town Center

Elm Street is not long, perhaps a quarter mile from end to end, but it packs a density of independent businesses that larger downtowns struggle to replicate. Elm restaurant serves seasonal New American cuisine at number 73. Gates Restaurant and Bar has occupied 10 Forest Street since 1979, offering brunch on weekends and live music on Saturday nights. The Roger Sherman Inn, a property with roots stretching back over 250 years and operating as an inn since 1925, presents French-inspired American dining under a recent renovation by restaurateurs Joseph and Nes Jaffre. These are not chain outposts. They are owner-operated establishments that depend on foot traffic from residents who live close enough to walk.

The New Canaan Library, designed by Centerbrook Architects under principal Jim Childress, opened its new 42,700-square-foot building in 2023. The $40 million project increased usable space by 30 percent while reducing energy consumption, and the original 1913 Alfred H. Taylor building was physically moved 100 feet on rails to sit across a courtyard from the new structure. Since opening, visitor numbers have risen 70 percent and programming has expanded by 250 percent. Around the corner, The Playhouse reopened in June 2024 under Cinema Lab's management after a pandemic-era closure, screening first-run films alongside live-streamed Metropolitan Opera and National Theatre performances in a 196-seat house.

Green space is closer than most downtowns allow. Mead Memorial Park offers baseball fields, lighted tennis courts, a pond with winter skating, batting cages, and a playground with an onsite cafe. Kiwanis Park, a 14-acre property on Old Norwalk Road, centers on a spring-fed swimming hole with a beach, basketball courts, a pavilion with a snack bar, and walking trails through wooded terrain. Both parks are within a short drive or bike ride from the center of town, extending the livability of a neighborhood where lot sizes are smaller but daily errands happen on foot.

Housing in Town Center spans a wider range than any other New Canaan neighborhood. In-town colonials and Victorians on compact lots trade between $1 million and $2.5 million for single-family homes. Condominiums and townhomes along Elm Street and the surrounding blocks offer entry points between $500,000 and $1 million, a rarity in a town where most neighborhoods start above seven figures. The Metro-North station at the base of Elm Street puts Grand Central Terminal within roughly 75 minutes, with a transfer at Stamford. Buyers pay a premium per square foot here because they are purchasing something New Canaan's outer neighborhoods cannot provide: the ability to walk to dinner, the train, the library, and the park without starting a car.
